I was adopted by a cat about a year ago. A stray kitten walked in through my kitchen door, looked me over and decided I would do for the post of honorary live-in companion. Never mind that I’m six-foot-two and have a heavy evening shadow, to her I’m the Mother Figure.

I come home through the gate at the end of a day and she gallops over to the gate to greet me with unabashed joy. At other times she’s sniffing every inch of the grass, slowly and painstakingly, as if she’s lost her contact lenses and she’s sure it's there somewhere. With her large ears, almost pure white color and lack of tail (she’s a Manx) we call her Rabbit.

Yesterday she brought home her first mouse. Or I should say MY first mouse. She didn’t want anything to do with it. She had gone hunting overnight and after snagging the precious specimen and hiding it behind the fridge, she brought it out with careful pride and laid the trophy at my feet at the breakfast table. Then she sat there, looking up at me expectantly as if to say, “Well, what are you looking at, aren’t you going to eat this delicious thing I’ve taken all this trouble to get for you?” I can still hear Alice's hysterics ringing in my head, hehehe.

I love that the cat adopted you, rather than the other way around. Consider yourself lucky! Pets provide many great rewards.
